The admission stages and what each one means

Read the stages separately; the detailed rules depend on the programme.
StageWhat it establishesWhat it does not establish
Academic eligibilityWhether the applicant meets the programme’s qualification conditions.A competitive CAT score or an interview call.
CAT thresholdsWhether sectional and overall conditions are met.A guaranteed place on the interview shortlist.
Interview shortlistWhether the applicant is invited to the next selection stage.A final admission offer.
Final selectionWhether the applicant receives an offer under the programme’s merit process.Completion of all document and acceptance requirements.

Start with the exact programme’s eligibility rules

For a current example, IIM Calcutta’s domestic MBA policy based on CAT 2026 states a bachelor’s-degree minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, reduced to 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. It also permits final-year applicants, subject to its completion and documentation conditions.

These figures describe that programme’s policy. They should not be applied automatically to every specialised, executive or one-year programme. For grades, follow the university’s certified conversion procedure and the institute’s instructions. A conversion formula used by another university may produce an incorrect application percentage.

Record two separate dates for final-year applications: when degree requirements must be completed, and when the final evidence must reach the institute. A provisional offer can still depend on both.

Minimum CAT cut-offs and interview shortlists are different

A sectional cut-off applies to an individual section. An overall cut-off applies to the total percentile. A candidate can meet the overall threshold and still fail a sectional condition.

In the IIM Calcutta policy linked above, the OPEN-category Stage I minimums are 80 percentile in VARC, 80 in DILR, 75 in QA and 85 overall, with non-negative raw scores in every section. The policy explicitly says actual cut-offs may be higher. These are CAT 2026 screening conditions, not guaranteed interview-call percentiles.

After the first filter, a composite score combines the components specified by the institute. The score used to shortlist candidates may differ from the score used for final selection. Do not treat a published minimum as a personalised admission prediction.

Read the interview and final selection sections separately

IIM Ahmedabad’s admissions overview identifies CAT, past academics, an analytical writing test and a personal interview as selection inputs for its domestic PGP route. Its 2027–29 domestic selection document sets out the detailed conditions for that batch.

Read the policy headings before looking at any percentage weight. Ask which stage the weight belongs to, which score is being normalised, and whether there are additional qualifying conditions. A larger CAT weight at one stage does not remove the interview requirement at another.

For interview preparation, assemble a factual record: your degree subjects, projects, responsibilities, employment dates and reasons for pursuing the programme. Use examples you can explain and support. Keep a copy of the application so your interview answers and submitted record agree.

Keep an application and document record

For each programme, save the policy PDF, application confirmation, shortlist notice and offer terms. Track actions under four headings: required document, issuing authority, deadline and submission status. Follow the institute’s list for academic records, identity evidence, category documents and work-experience proof where applicable.

Work experience needs particular care: qualifying employment, the date through which months are counted and the evidence required can be defined differently. Report what the policy asks for rather than assuming every internship or project counts as full-time employment.

Use the IIM directory to find official institute sites. Before accepting an offer, read the fee and cost checklist. While preparing for CAT, review section-level performance in the mock tracker so an overall score does not hide a weak section.

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing an IIM CAT cut-off guarantee an interview?

No. A minimum threshold is a screening condition. The institute may use further composite-score criteria to build its shortlist.

Can a fresher apply to an IIM MBA programme?

Some two-year programmes admit fresh graduates. IIM Ahmedabad’s admissions overview explicitly describes a mix of fresh graduates and students with work experience. Check the exact programme policy.

Are admission criteria the same for every IIM?

No. Use the current policy for the institute, programme, applicant route and admission batch.
