An official example: IIM Udaipur MBA 2027–29

IIM Udaipur’s published 2027–29 MBA fee schedule provides a useful example of how a fee table works. It lists tuition, hostel, mess, a refundable caution deposit and an alumni charge separately.

IIM Udaipur, MBA 2027–29 schedule, checked on 28 October 2026; amounts in INR.
ItemPublished amountHow to read it
Offer-acceptance payment₹1,00,000The schedule marks Term I tuition as adjusted for the commitment fee.
Term I total₹3,19,250Includes the listed tuition, hostel, mess and refundable deposit after that adjustment.
Terms II and III₹3,99,250 eachUse the term totals to plan later first-year payments.
Term IV₹3,65,000Includes the listed alumni charge.
Terms V and VI₹3,60,000 eachLater second-year instalments.

Adding the acceptance payment and six published term totals gives ₹23,02,750. This is our arithmetic from the listed payments, including the ₹20,000 refundable caution deposit. It is not a claim that every personal expense is covered. Confirm the mess billing period with the institute before treating these listed payments as a complete living-cost budget.

Separate the charges before comparing colleges

Use the same categories for each programme and label estimates separately.
Cost categoryWhat to recordCommon comparison problem
Programme chargesTuition and other compulsory academic or administrative charges.Comparing one institute’s tuition with another’s all-inclusive fee.
Residential chargesHostel, mess and any recurring adjustments.Assuming food or accommodation is included without checking.
Refundable depositsAmount, refund conditions and likely timing.Ignoring the cash needed upfront because the charge may later be refunded.
Personal expensesTravel, laptop, connectivity and day-to-day spending.Treating an institutional fee total as the full personal budget.
Optional activitiesExchange, immersion or other optional costs.Adding an optional cost for one programme but not the other.

A budget worksheet with an illustrative calculation

For your own comparison, begin with the official schedule and add only expenses that it excludes. The following amounts are invented to show the calculation; they are not fees quoted by any institute.

  • Non-refundable programme and residential charges: ₹22,00,000.
  • Personal spending estimate: ₹6,000 per month for 24 months, or ₹1,44,000.
  • Travel and equipment estimate: ₹80,000.
  • Refundable deposit: ₹20,000.

The estimated non-refundable spending is ₹24,24,000. The deposit raises the amount that must be funded during the programme to ₹24,44,000. Keeping the two totals separate avoids counting a possible refund as money available at admission.

If you leave employment to study, record income forgone separately from the amount payable to the institute. That is an opportunity-cost estimate, not a fee or an automatic borrowing requirement.

Plan by payment date as well as total

A two-year total does not show how much cash is needed before the first term. Copy the acceptance deadline and each instalment date into a calendar. Record when any approved funding would actually become available and which charges it covers.

Use the terms of your own sanction letter for borrowing costs, repayment timing and disbursement conditions. A rate shown in someone else’s example is not evidence of the terms available to you. Do not count an unapproved scholarship or a possible internship payment as money already secured.

IIM Udaipur’s financing page describes need-based assistance, including eligibility and assessment. Assistance is a separate application and assessment process; it should be recorded separately from the published fee.

Before paying an acceptance amount

Save the batch-specific fee schedule and offer letter. Check what the acceptance amount is adjusted against, which charges are refundable, how withdrawal requests must be submitted and which deadlines apply. Seek clarification from the institute where the documents leave a cost undefined.

Compare employment outcomes on the same basis as well. A placement figure is annual compensation under a report’s definition, not a guaranteed amount available to repay your education costs. The placement report guide explains fixed cash, variable pay and median figures.

Use the official IIM directory to find the programme pages for each option. Keep the source, batch and verification date beside every figure; a fee for 2026–28 should not silently become a quotation for 2027–29.
