Why an IIM PGP can award an MBA

PGP is a programme label, short for Post Graduate Programme. It is not enough to identify the final qualification. IIM Bangalore’s PGP admissions page explicitly states that its PGP leads to an MBA degree. IIM Ahmedabad also describes its two-year PGP as its flagship MBA programme.

This is why “MBA versus PGP” can be a misleading comparison. One term can describe the award and the other the programme. Read the sentence in the brochure that specifies what successful graduates receive.

Record the full award name in your comparison notes. If a website uses several short names, ask the admissions office which qualification will appear on the degree or diploma certificate.

PGDM equivalence is something to verify

The UGC FAQ on PGDM eligibility for NET directs diploma holders to ascertain equivalence with a recognised university master’s degree through the Association of Indian Universities. That is a verification step, not a statement that every PGDM automatically has the same status.

AIU publishes a list of PGDM programmes granted MBA equivalence. Its entries identify programmes and validity periods, with conditions attached. An old listing or an expired letter should not be treated as evidence that the same status covers a new intake.

When further study matters to you, check the institute name, programme title, mode, duration, validity dates and stated purpose of the equivalence. Then confirm the receiving university’s requirements for the course you intend to enter. Do not infer that a letter for one diploma covers every programme at the same institution.

Compare admissions, teaching and outcomes separately

The MBA or PGDM label cannot tell you which entrance tests are accepted, whether work experience is required or which courses are offered. Those belong to the programme’s admission policy and curriculum.

Build a comparison using the same six fields for each option: award, recognition or equivalence evidence, entry route, course structure, total cost and programme-specific placement report. Leave missing information visible. A blank field is a reason to obtain the document, not to substitute a general claim about degrees or diplomas.

For example, if you want to study analytics, inspect the actual courses and prerequisites. A programme title containing “analytics” and a general management programme with analytics electives may involve different academic requirements. The MBA specialisations guide explains how to compare those structures.

Documents to collect before accepting an offer

  1. Current brochure: confirm the award, study mode, duration and admitting institution.
  2. Recognition or approval evidence: check what applies to that institution and programme.
  3. Equivalence letter, if relevant: read its scope and validity rather than relying on a logo or short claim.
  4. Fee schedule: record inclusions, instalments and withdrawal terms.
  5. Placement report: match the programme and graduating batch.

Keep the documents with your application record. If eligibility for a specific examination or higher degree is essential, get the relevant authority’s answer before paying a non-refundable charge. Use the MBA cost checklist and placement report guide for the financial and outcome comparisons.

Frequently asked questions

Is every PGDM automatically equivalent to an MBA?

Do not assume so. Verify the exact programme, validity period and conditions in the applicable equivalence evidence, and check the receiving institution’s requirements.

Does PGP always mean a diploma?

No. PGP is a programme label. IIM Bangalore’s PGP admissions page states that its programme leads to an MBA degree.

Does an MBA always have better placements than a PGDM?

The qualification label does not establish placement outcomes. Compare official reports for the exact programmes and batches.
