General MBA with electives or a specialised programme?
Start with the programme structure. IIM Bangalore’s PGP curriculum combines compulsory core courses with electives. Its published elective areas include decision sciences, marketing, finance-related study, organisational behaviour and operations.
By comparison, IIM Mumbai’s official programme menu lists an MBA alongside named MBAs in Operations and Supply Chain Management and Sustainability Management. A dedicated programme title and a set of electives within a general MBA are different arrangements.
Before applying, establish which arrangement the institute uses. Check when choices are made, whether access to an elective depends on prerequisites or allocation, and whether the chosen area appears in the final qualification.
What the main MBA study areas cover
| Area | Examples of academic topics | A useful question to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Finance | Accounting, valuation, corporate finance, markets and risk. | Does the curriculum cover the type of financial analysis you want to study? |
| Marketing | Consumer behaviour, research, brands, pricing and distribution. | How much work involves customer research, sales or quantitative analysis? |
| HR and organisational behaviour | People management, organisation design, behaviour and leadership. | Is this a dedicated HR programme or a general MBA with related electives? |
| Operations and supply chain | Processes, capacity, inventory, sourcing, logistics and service delivery. | Which analytical methods and applied projects are included? |
| Analytics and information systems | Statistics, business models, data analysis and digital systems. | What mathematical, software and programming preparation is expected? |
| Strategy and entrepreneurship | Competition, business models, new ventures and growth decisions. | Which projects let students apply the material to a business problem? |
Published course titles provide concrete evidence. IIM Lucknow’s elective list, for example, includes Consumer Behaviour, Financial Statement Analysis and Service Operations Management. Read course descriptions where available; similar titles can cover different material.
Compare the work behind each subject
A useful starting point is a business problem rather than a label. Finance might involve evaluating a company’s cash flows. Marketing might involve understanding why customers stop buying. Operations might involve reducing delays in a distribution network. Analytics might involve testing which factors explain those delays.
These examples overlap because business functions overlap. An interest in numbers alone does not distinguish finance from analytics or operations. Ask what decision you want to investigate, what evidence you would use and which methods the curriculum teaches.
Compare a few course outlines and assessment descriptions. Identify the balance of cases, quantitative exercises, group projects and individual work. Record any prerequisites that would require preparation before joining.
Check elective availability and selection rules
An elective catalogue describes options, but it does not always guarantee access to every course. IIM Bangalore’s published structure describes a bidding system for electives and notes that the tentative list can change with student interest.
Check the current handbook for how many credits can be chosen, whether timetable clashes restrict combinations, and what happens when a course is oversubscribed. If a particular course is central to your decision, ask whether it is scheduled for the batch you would join.
Use the same approach for internships, exchange terms and live projects: distinguish a published opportunity from a compulsory part of the degree.
Use placement reports to check the career connection
A course develops knowledge; recruitment also depends on the roles offered, employer criteria, experience and individual selection. A specialisation name alone cannot establish placement access or compensation.
Look for function-wise roles in the exact programme’s placement report. A sector table describes employers’ industries; it does not necessarily tell you which function a student joined. An analytics role in a bank, for example, belongs to a financial-services sector but involves a different function from corporate lending.
Use the placement report guide to compare those definitions. Then record your course priorities beside the full programme cost and admission requirements. For CAT preparation before that stage, mock analysis helps turn test results into specific study tasks.
Frequently asked questions
Do all IIMs offer separate degrees for each specialisation?
No. Check whether the programme offers a named specialist qualification or a general MBA with electives.
Can I choose any elective listed on an institute website?
Check allocation, prerequisites and the current schedule. IIM Bangalore describes elective bidding and a tentative list that may change.
Which MBA specialisation has the highest salary?
A specialisation label alone cannot establish salary. Use programme-specific placement reports with comparable roles, batches and compensation definitions.
